Design

Alienware’s Angular Brand Design is on display complete with this 17-inch gaming laptop. The look of the gray-gray spaceship has not changed much in recent years: it is always aggressive and dominant, with its angles and its two-tone blend of gray and black, but it is also chic and refined, with construction in solid aluminum and touches the plastic.

The lid features the Alienware logo and lifting it reveals a black deck and soft to the touch; a full keyboard with a numeric keypad and macro keys; a Tobii eye-tracking camera; and the 17.3-inch 1080p screen. But this is not a black and gray affair. The keyboard, touchpad, Alienware logo and light strips are on the sides of the bridge and can be illuminated with customizable RGBs. I preferred to use solid colors, but you can change each light individually and choose stronger effects with AlienFX.

The laptop is surrounded by ports, so there is plenty of room for expansion. On the right side, there is a single USB 3.0 port and some vents, while the left is home to the Noble lock slot, a USB Type-C port, a USB 3.0 port, a microphone/headphone jacks. There’s even more at the back: an Ethernet jack, a mini DisplayPort, an HDMI output, a power jack, Thunderbolt 3 port, and a connection for the Alienware Graphics Amp, which enables you to connect a GPU of external office for 4K games and VR.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The Alienware’s traditional style keyboard (no Chiclet-style keyboards here) is nice and comfortable, with 2.3 millimeters of stroke and 75 grams of force needed to operate the keys. Even though the keyboard is placed farther on the deck than I would have liked, the soft-touch plastic made it comfortable enough to hit. My only wish is that the keys appear with more force to match how much I press them.

The 3.5 x 2.2-inch touchpad looks a little cramped, especially with plenty of deck space, but it’s accurate and has enough room for Windows 10 gestures. I could pinch and zoom on photos, scroll through browsers and flick through programs in a reduced state quickly and easily.

Display

The Alienware 17 is available with several different 17.3-inch display panels with resolutions ranging from 1080p to 4k. The configurations we tested had the 1920×1080 base model screen and the 2560×1440 high-end display, the latter being shipped with Nvidia G-Sync technology. The most expensive panel is worth it, thanks to its superior brightness and sharpness.

In our tests, the base and the 1440p screen respectively covered 113% and 114% of the sRGB color gamut, corresponding to the MSI Titan %175 and also below the 120% average. The ROG and Dominator Pro were a few percentage points away from the Alienware panels, but the Razer Blade Pro has a staggering 185%.

I increased the brightness on the 1080p screen because it measured an average of 278 nits, which places it below the average of 295 nits, the Dominator Pro (301 nits) and the ROG (a bright 476 nits). However, it was even brighter than the 257 nits of the GT75 Titan. The 1440p screen got a much better score at 340 nits, surpassing the 304 nits of the Blade Pro. I should note that the 1440p version supports G-Sync, which synchronizes the GPU with the screen so that there is no tearing while the game, and it has a 120-hertz screen.

Graphics and Performance

The cheapest Alienware 17 and its GPU Nvidia GTX 1070 with 8 GB of VRAM is quite powerful, and the GTX 1080 version is even more powerful. With either configuration, you’ll be able to play intense games at high settings and even get smooth VR performance. With the GTX 1080, I set all the graphics parameters as high as they could go and I played the game at 2560 x 1440p and 120 Hz – the best this system could offer.

When you’re not playing, you can do some serious work on the Alienware 17 setup that we’ve tested. First, I tried the low-end model, which had a 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, and a 1TB hard drive. Unity, I had 40 tabs open in Google Chrome, two of which showed high-quality Twitch streams and never saw a hint of lag. You can expect better performance from the other model that we examined, which has a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7-7820HK, 16 GB of RAM, a 512 GB PCIe SSD and a 1 GB hard drive.

If you care about storage speed, do not get the Alienware 17 with its 128GB mSATA SSD base. The configuration we tested with the 128GB SSD took a minute and 2 seconds to copy 4.97 GB of media files, for a rate of 83.4 MBps. However, the high-end configuration of Alienware 17 with the 512GB PCIe SSD has reached a reasonable speed of 282 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

You will be able to play Alienware 17 on a lower level than the competition; It lasted 3 hours and 46 minutes on our Battery Test, which involves continuous web browsing via Wi-Fi. Design

The majority of the interior of the laptop is brushed aluminum, but a soft-touch material is the palm rest. Keyboard and TouchPad

Once I woke up, the rhythmic clatter of the mechanical keyboard was almost therapeutic, like a more beautiful and useful version of a kinetic ball machine. The insular style keys have a substantial crucial 2.4-millimeter displacement with 75 grams of force activation.

The Synaptics touchpad of 4 x 2.8 inches, which is also very large, is carved in the large palm rest. There was plenty of room for my sharp fingers to perform Windows 10 gestures, including using a three-finger press to summon Cortana and a four-finger scan to scroll through open apps. Display

The colors of this 17.3-inch screen are incredible! The details were crisp enough on the 1080p panel so I could easily see the fabric patterns in the Bloody Baron’s red-pink tunic spread over his substantial body.

Thanks to Nvidia G-Sync technology, synchronizing the 120 Hz panel and the graphics card, the game ran seamlessly. It meant that I did not see a single tear, a jaggie or a stutter through all that dashing. This left me free to take advantage of the carnage flow in my wake or to stop and smell the idiot’s parsley. Our lab tests confirmed my impressions of these vibrant color flushes; the MSI panel recorded 175% of the sRGB color gamut.

As strong as colors are on the Titan panel, it’s not as bright as I expected. We got an average of 257 nit, which is below the 279-nit average for high-end laptops. The MSI screen performed worse than the Eon17-X (289 nits), Blade Pro (320 nits) or Alienware 17 ( 352 nits).

Graphics and Performance

It’s time to release the beast! Armed with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU with 8GB of VRAM, the Titan is entirely out of the proverbial bubble. While I was tracking a werewolf in Witcher 3, I first had to deal with his lupine henchmen, which I did, slicing and teleporting my way through the fray at 98 frames per second on Ultra at 1920 x 1080. The MSI dusted the average of 502MBps and surpassed the results of the Alienware 17, and Blade Pro. Though, this MSI was no match for the ROG G701V1, which reached an incredible 1,272MBps.

Battery Life and Heat

With a laptop this massive, you can expect a relatively short battery life. The Titan lasted just 2 hours and 54 minutes, which is below the 3:36 average for high-end notebooks. However, this time is even better than 1:54 of Blade Pro. The Alienware 17 was the last system running, with a time of 3:47.

Not that you never use the Titan on your lap, but if you’re so inclined, I’m happy to tell you that you will not endanger your future children. I spent 15 minutes fighting all kinds of wolves and monsters in the woods from Velen to Witcher 3. After that, I took the temperature of the laptop at the touchpad (78 degrees Fahrenheit), middle (91 degrees ) and the landing gear (88 degrees). I was surprised that the results were well below our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. It was warmer towards the rear vents, with a temperature of 113 degrees.

I said it once, and I repeat: I like a weird laptop. And with the GT75 Titan, MSI is once again responding to my desire for performance-oriented extravagance. Admittedly, I will never be able to afford this monster, but I appreciate the exceptional power of the six-core Intel processor and the overclockable Nvidia GPU of this system. The mechanical keyboard is a joy to hear, to look at and to type.

Despite being a little dark, the Titan’s screen has a liveliness that cannot be denied. And when paired with the machine’s great speakers, you have a mini entertainment system just waiting to be explored. I was impressed by the quality of the laptop.

Design

There is just something about a Razer laptop that makes the pulse pick up a bit when you see it. Built from black CNC aluminum, the Blade Pro follows the Razer design to a T, just on a larger scale. The center of the laptop’s lid is slightly recessed, creating a pair of subtle ridges that help accentuate the glittering emerald three-headed snake emblem.

The interior of the system offers more ebony foil, with the center of the deck housing the standard keyboard and the touchpad large enough in a slightly recessed compartment. A power button is at the top center of the device; you dare to press it. The Blade Pro is not loaded with ports like other desktop replacements, but what it has is vital for multi-screen configurations and virtual reality. Along the right is a USB 3.0 port, Thunderbolt 3, a card reader, an HDMI 2.0 port and a Kensington security lock slot. There are two other USB 3.0 ports on the left with a Gigabit Ethernet port, a headphone jack, and a proprietary power jack.

Keyboard and TouchPad

I’m always on the fence when it comes to Razer keyboards. They are notoriously shallow, which can be a little uncomfortable at first, but manageable once you get used to it. The ultra-low profile Pro blade blades have only 1 millimeter of key travel (between 1.5 and 2 mm is ideal) with 71 grams of actuation (60 grams is the minimum). However, these ultra-low switches are comfortable and offer a nice click when you start typing.

Like the previous models, the Blade Pro’s massive 4 x 3.3-inch touchpad is located to the right of the keyboard, which takes a bit of getting used to. But once I was adjusted, I had no problem invoking Cortana, zooming in and out of the photos, scrolling on two fingers and turning on the device. The programmable scroll wheel continues to be one of my favorite components of the blade. For example, to adjust the volume, push the wheel up or down.

Display

Looking at the 4K panel of the Pro Blade is like looking into a color fever dream. The Predator 17 X and the Eon 17-X were even brighter, with results of 182 and 192 percent, respectively. The 1080p Blade Pro did not disappoint, with a range of 126 percent.

You’ll never have a problem viewing the Blade Pro screen, because the 1080p and 4K displays average glowing scores of 334 and 320 nits of brightness, respectively. They easily surpassed the 291-nit average, the Predator 17 X (with 318 nits), the Eon17-X (with 289 nits) and the G701VI (with 277 nits). The Alienware 17 has the brightest screen in the country, at 340 nits.

Graphics and Performance

Do not compare the thinness of the Pro blade to weakness. On the contrary, one of these slender stunners is equipped with a GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 with 8 GB of VRAM, the most powerful GPU that you can get in a laptop. Meanwhile, the 1080p version switches a GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6 GB of VRAM. This means that when it was time for me to empty a swamp of fog in Witcher 3, the 4K laptop maintained a stable frame rate of 37 frames per second on the Ultra settings while the GTX 1060 delivered an acceptable 30 fps.

The Blade Pro officially plays with the big boys, moving from the latest Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor to an Intel Core i7-7820HK clocked at 2.9 GHz with 32GB of RAM. The 1080p model also benefited from an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor clocked at 2.8 GHz with 16 GB of RAM. So, none of my laptops had any problem with me running some Twitch feeds, with TweetDeck, Slack, and YouTube in the rest of my 20 Chrome tabs while the system was running a full virus scan.

The 256GB 4k Blade Pro PCIe SSD pair in RAID 0 configuration duplicated 4.97 GB of media content on our file copy test in 15 seconds; this corresponds to a transfer rate of 339 megabytes per second. It’s not as fast as the average of 540.3 Mbps, but it’s even better than the 228 Mbps rate of Alienware 17 (512GB SSD) and the 1080p Blade Pro (256MB SSD PCIe hard drive). 2 TB 7,200 rpm) 175.5 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

With specifications like these, you will take a hit on the battery life. The Pro Blade only lasted 1 hour and 54 minutes on our battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi), which is well below the desktop replacement average of 3:36. It was enough to survive the 1:39 of the Eon 17-X, but not the times of the Predator 17-X (1:58), the Alienware 17 (3:46) or the G701VI (3:27). The 1080p model of Blade Pro lasted an impressive test 6:11, putting the other systems in shame.

Razer’s has retained its unique cooling system with a hidden internal fan, a steam chamber, and a dynamic heat exchanger, keeping the entire aluminum chassis cool. The company has also added copper-based cooling fins and other heat spreaders to accommodate overclockable components. But no matter how cool Razer is, it’s hard to keep an all-metal chassis. After 15 minutes of playing through Witcher 3, the touchpad measured 101 degrees Fahrenheit, several degrees on our 95-degree comfort threshold. The center of the system reached 119 degrees, while the landing gear measured 121 degrees.

Conclusion

The Razer Blade Pro was already a great laptop for gaming, virtual reality, and content creation. The desktop replacement delivered a stunning 4K Nvidia G-Sync display, great graphics and overall performance in one of the thinnest and lightest chassis we’ve seen on a system of this size. This time, Razer improved on some things, moving to an overclocked Intel Core i7 “Kaby Lake” processor and adding THX certification to its display and audio – making it the first mobile device to hold the title.

Origin PC Eon17 X

When you want a gaming laptop with genuinely exotic performance and a multitude of customization options, do not accept any substitute. The company reorganized its Eon17-X to accommodate a ridiculously powerful Intel 8th-Gen desktop processor, which plays surprisingly well with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, PCIe SSD, and G-Sync display inhabiting the massive chassis. As if that were not enough, the CPU and the GPU of the laptop are overloaded. But all this power and customization are not cheap.

Design

The Eon17-X is like someone wearing a red outfit on a black and white ball: the center of attention. Origin returns the tired pattern of black and red player on his head with a dark red cover, instead of the funky accent, as the star of the show. The original black logo fills this role and the slate gray brushed aluminum plate at the bottom of the lid. Maybe one day, Origin will offer consumers the option of playing with the keyboard.

But for now, I had to resign myself to the black plastic interior of the Eon17-X, which is not as exciting as its crimson exterior. The large speaker grilles sit between the hinges of the laptop while framing the power button and a series of status lights built into some of this sleek, gray aluminum.

The Eon17-X is loaded with ports as befits a desktop replacement. On the right, you’ll see two USB 3.0 ports, a secure lock slot, and sockets for audio output, headphones, microphone, and S / PDIF. Another pair of USB 3.0 ports is on the left, with a USB Type-C port, a Thunderbolt 3 port, a 3-in-1 card reader and Gigabit Ethernet. At the back are two mini DisplayPorts and an HDMI 2.0 port.

Keyboard and TouchPad

Although the Eon17 keyboard got a high score in our test (2 millimeters stroke and 79 grams of actuation force required), some of the keys seemed soft (the A and G keys, for example) while others reflected our results. Origin continues to cling to the older GameFeet application to manage the customization of the keyboard backlight. With its three zones and lack of proper lighting, GameFeet does not respond to MSI’s SteelSeries Engine, Alienware’s AlienFX and Razer’s Synapse software. However, it is quite easy to create a striking configuration and create macros.

The 4.2 x 2.4-inch Windows Precision Touchpad is very spacious, even with the built-in fingerprint reader in the upper right-hand corner. Gestures like pinching to zoom, running Cortana and switching from one application to another were a breeze. I appreciate that Origin PC continues to offer the fingerprint reader. It’s a smart way to use Windows Hello if you’re shy. I also like having the opportunity to put all my precious game backups under a biometric key.

Display

I enjoyed the rich colors of the Eon17-X’s 2560 x 1440 matte screen. The Eon17 is equipped with Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, which syncs the GPU to the screen for even smoother rendering, making The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt very beautiful. After a hard night’s fight, Geralt went to town on his faithful steed Roach, white padlocks like waterfalls on his shoulders like a slow avalanche.

The screen of the Eon17-X can reproduce 104% of the sRGB range, which is good, although it missed the 128% average. However, all competitors scored much higher. For example, the Acer Predator 17X produced an impressive 182 percent, while the Asus ROG G701V1 and the Alienware 17 R4 scored 113 percent.

On average 325 nits, the screen of the Eon17-X is very bright. This score is well above the 287-nit desktop replacement average as well as the Predator 17X (318 nits), G701V1 (277 nits) and Titan Pro (276 nits). However, the Alienware 17 was a little brighter with a brightness of 340 nits.

Graphics and Performance

This heartbreaking sound you hear when you start playing one of your AAA titles on the Eon17-X is the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU with 8GB of VRAM rendering like a dervish while delivering image rates ridiculous. I set the settings on Ultra for my Witcher 3 play-through and let my blade fly against a nasty Noonwraith. After trapping him with my Yrden spell, I hit a few shots with my silver sword and quickly dodged his gnarled hands as she attempted to attack.

Origin PC could have put a high-end mobile processor in the Eon17-X, but where is the pleasure in all this? Instead, the company has equipped the laptop with a 3.7-GHz Intel Core i7-8700K processor with 16 GB of RAM. That’s right: They piled an 8th Gen chip into a laptop. I ran Witcher 3 in a new window when running a Planet Earth II episode on Netflix with 30 tabs open in Chrome browser. There was not so much stuttering of the Eon17-X.

When we tested the file transfer speeds, the Eon17-X’s 512GB NVMe PCIe SSD (and 2 TB, 5,400 rpm) duplicated 4.97 GB of media files in 9 seconds, at a rate of transfer of 565.5 megabytes per second. That’s better than the average of 437.4 Mbps and the Titan Pro (256GB SSD PCIe) 391.5 Mbps. However, they did not match the G701V1 (two 512 GB m.2 PCIe SSDs) and the Predator 17X (two 256 GB SSD), which were in near-zero heat at 1,272.4 and 1,272, respectively.

Battery Life and Heat

Because it contains so much power, I was not surprised to learn that the Eon17-X lasted only 1 hour and 41 minutes on our battery test (surfing the web on Wi-Fi) which is well below the average 4:35 desktop replacement. The Predator 17X lasted a little longer, at 1:58. The Titan Pro and Alienware 17 registered with 2:24 and 3:46, respectively, while the G701V1 was in between them with a time of 3:27.

In usual multi-tasking and multimedia conditions, the Eon17-X is pretty cool. When we measured the touchpad, the center, and the bottom, the system provided of 79, 92 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit temperatures, all of them are below our 95-degree comfort threshold.

The original PC never ceases to amaze with how much it can jerry-rig in a laptop chassis. You can get the factory-overclocked Eon17-X, which delivers impressive performance on graphics and multitasking fronts. The audio system is noisy and immersive and only serves to enhance an already excellent presentation. If you’re looking for an extravagant look at the kitchen sink pattern, the Origin PC Eon17-X is an excellent choice.

Design

The Acer Predator 17 X is not the most attractive gaming laptop I’ve ever seen, but something about its tank-like chassis speaks to me. Much of my affinity comes from the fact that all this material is wrapped in a matte black material that is soft to the touch. I’m also a big fan of the little Acer honeycomb pattern hidden under the hinge. It would be nice if the company would redesign the logo on the lid, which still looks strangely like a Decepticon logo. However, it seems powerful intimidating between the brilliant red accent strips on the lid.

The front lip of the laptop has three bright red metal grids to add to its player credo. But for some reason, the shade of red seems more showy than excited. The rear vents with their large cross hatches seem much more authentic. The Predator 17 is loaded with ports, with a pair of USB 3.0 ports on the right with a Thunderbolt 3 port, HDMI 2.0, a DisplayPort, Gigabit Ethernet and a Kensington lock slot. Along the left of the laptop are two other USB 3.0 ports, an SD card slot and sockets for a microphone, a pair of headphones and the DC adapter.

Keyboard and TouchPad

It’s not a mechanic, but I’m still a fan of the Predator 17 X island-style keyboard. The colorful, backlit keys offer an elastic clarity that feels good. I’m not necessarily a fan of red-ring WASD keys, but I’m just like that. The elastic quality is the result of the 2.1-millimeter keystroke paired with the 64 grams of actuating force, both of which are above our accepted minimum measurements. I’m always a fan of a gaming laptop with a numeric keypad, and Acer delivers. The laptop also has a row of programmable macro keys on the left, with a switch that lets you choose between four separate profiles, which turns five keys into 20.

Measuring 4.1 x 2.4 inches, the touchpad provided plenty of room for my fingers to pinch-zoom or scroll with two fingers. Throughout my tests, I found that the touchpad was always accurate and responsive. The finishing touch is the pair of discrete mouse buttons that offered clicky comments to every press.

Display

The Predator 17 X’s 17.3-inch and 3840 x 2160 display offers lush shades with crisp detail. The Predator 17 X’s display features Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, which allows the screen to sync directly with the graphics card for optimal performance. In my experience, most games worked well on the Acer, regardless of whether G-Sync was enabled. However, the images seemed a lot smoother with G-Sync enabled.

The vivid color of the panel is due to its ability to reproduce 181.5% of the sRGB color gamut. It easily overcomes the category average of 144 percent as well as screens on competing systems like Alienware 17 and G701VI. The Pro blade was just a bit brighter, at 185 percent. When we checked the brightness, the Predator 17 X averaged 318 nits, surpassing the 296-nit average. It’s not too ugly, notably since it exceeded the 304 nits of the blade and the 277 nits of the G701VI. However, it was not sufficient to overshadow the Alienware’s high 340 nits.

Graphics and Performance

Need to save an entire universe, or cause chaos? The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU of the Predator 17 X with 8 GB of VRAM can do all this and more. Because it’s the most powerful mobile graphics card available, you can expect high and smooth image rates on the most challenging games. The system is also compatible with virtual reality, which means you can connect an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive to the laptop and start exploring the virtual scope.

The Predator 17 X is just as powerful for spreadsheets, presentations, and multitasking as when you’re in the middle of a battle. The 2.9 GHz, Intel Core i7-7820HK processor with 32 GB of RAM, ran a full system scan while running an episode of Rick & Morty with 20 open tabs in Google Chrome without significant latency.

Both 256GB SSD (with a hard drive of 1TB at 7,200rpm) should be used when launching your games. The system duplicated 4.97 GB of media files in a 4-second zippy, which translates to a throughput of 1,272.3 megabytes per second. It’s a bit behind the G701VI (two PCIe m.2 512GB SSDs) 1,272.4 MBps, but more than enough to burn the average of 514 MBps.

Battery Life and Heat

It goes without saying that with desktop replacements like this, you need to make sure that a power outlet is always at hand. The Predator 17 X died after just 1 hour and 58 minutes of running our battery test (web surfing over Wi-Fi), which is way below the desktop replacement average of 3:36. The Pro Blade and Alienware 17 did a little better at 2:45 and 3:46, respectively. The G701VI lasted 3:27.

Having overclockable components can increase the temperature of a laptop, which could damage the system over time. To combat this problem, Acer has equipped the Predator 17 X with a cooling system with three fans, front air intake and a steam chamber so that everything is relatively fresh. I tested the system by playing 15 minutes of Mass Effect: Andromeda, during which the fans roared to life. It would have been a pity if the Predator’s powerful speakers did not cover the noise.

Five minutes after the test, I measured the landing gear of the laptop, which measured 116 degrees Fahrenheit. But by the end of our test, the temperature had dropped to 96 degrees, a bit higher than our 95-degree comfort zone. The center of the laptop was just on the 95-degree edge while the touchpad registered 84 degrees.

The Acer Predator 17 X is not the prettiest laptop on the block, but, man, is it powerful. You get a monster of a gaming platform with an overclockable processor and GPU, a gorgeous 4K Nvidia G-Sync display with excellent sound and incredibly fast transfer speeds to win the spot. However, its massive size and short battery life are an albatross around the neck of an otherwise excellent laptop. But overall, if you’re looking for a kickass system with powerful specifications that can stay cool under pressure, the Acer Predator 17 X is an excellent choice.

Asus ROG G701VI

The Asus ROG G701VI is a great kitchen sink. For starters, the laptop is equipped with a 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake processor, coupled with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU – currently the most powerful portable GPU on the market. Then you have a pair of m.2 PCIe SSDs in RAID 0 for some of the fastest transfer speeds I’ve seen from a laptop. Then you have a screen with 178-degree viewing angles and Nvidia G-Sync technology. The result is a laptop that can provide high frame rates, run VR and multitasking like a beast – while making your friends and family ooh and ahh. If you’re ready to splurge, it’s a gaming system that should be at the top of your list.

Design

At the bottom of my heart, I do not believe that orange and bronze gray mix. However, all this logic comes out the window when I look at the G701VI. The brushed gray aluminum lid brings out the innate beauty of the backlit orange accent surrounding the Republic of Gamers brilliant emblem. The copper chrome at the top of the slightly thick hinge distracts you from the clutter. Asus recalled Peachy accents on the inside, going with a more black, gray and red color scheme. There is a thin copper band at the top that separates the bridge from the power button.

The G701VS has some future ports, including the Thunderbolt port and the Type-C USB port located on the right of the laptop. There is also a USB 3.0 port, HDMI 2.0, a Mini DisplayPort and Gigabit Ethernet. On the left of the system are a pair of USB 3.0 ports, an SD card reader, microphone/headphone jacks, and a Kensington lock in the left hinge. You’ll find a sizeable proprietary port on the back for the G701VI’s heavy power cord.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The G701VI island-style keyboard is not the most clicked keyboard I’ve used. The keys delivered an excellent spring back despite their 1.3 millimeters (1.5 to 2 mm is ideal) keystroke with actuation of 57 grams (60 g minimum). The red backlight of the keyboard is bright enough to see in dark environments, but I am disappointed that Asus does not add the RGB lights you find on the Asus ROG Strix GL553VD cheaper to this system.

On 4.6 x 2.6-inch touchpad, there’s more than enough room for your fingers to slip on its smooth surface. I had no problem performing multitouch gestures such as pinch zoom, two-finger scroll, three-finger swipe, etc. Instead of using the bottom corners of the tablet, the laptop has a pair of hidden buttons that are a bit soft but do the work.

Display

You would have a hard time finding a bad seat in the house by looking at the G701VI’s screen, thanks to its 178 degrees wide viewing angle. It meant that I could sit at the far right of the 17.3-inch, 1920 x 1080 display and watch everything I want. At 227 nits, the G701VI’s screen is brighter than the X7 (252 nits), but not the average of 296-nit, Titan, Blade Pro or Eon17.

The G701VI panel can reproduce 113% of the sRGB range, which is excellent and comparable to the X7 and Titan, which reach 114%. However, none of them could match the 122 percent desktop replacement average or the incredible 178 and 185 percent scores, respectively, of the Eon17 and the Blade Pro.

Graphics and Performance

The G701VI is an absolute game beast. I have not yet come across a game that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU system with 8 GB of VRAM has not drilled, leaving silky graphics and high frame rates in its wake. Just like the other Pascal GPUs, 1080 is also ready for virtual reality, so you can hook up an HTC Vive or Oculus Rift and trigger digital chaos.

Featuring a 7th generation 7.9 GHz Intel Core i7-7820HK processor with a ridiculous 64GB RAM, the G701VI is a model of multitasking and productivity. I watched with confidence a Twitch stream while running a full system scan in Windows Defender while having 20 open tabs in Google Chrome. I only noticed the slightest lag when I launched Tomb Raider.

The G701VI and its two PCIe, m.2 512GB SSDs in RAID 0 configuration, is the fastest installation I’ve had the pleasure of playing. The system duplicated 4.97 GB of media files in 4 seconds. This translates to a transfer rate of 1,272.4 megabytes per second, literally beating the average of 512 Mbps. The Titan PCIe 512GB SSD pair took second place with 1,018 Mbps, while the X7 (NVIDe M12 512GB PCIe SSD) and Eon17 (256GB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSDs) recorded 463 and 424 respectively, 1 Mbps. The 256GB PCIe SSD from the Blade Pro finished last with 391.5 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

During the battery test (continuous web surfing over Wi-Fi), the G701VI lasted 3 hours and 27 minutes, which is below the desktop replacement average of 3:36. But it’s even longer than Blade Pro, X7, Titan, and Eon17, all of which lasted less than 3 hours.

I did a mission in Witcher 3 for 15 minutes, and after my antics, I measured the temperature of the system in several places. The touchpad measures 90 degrees Fahrenheit, while the center of the system reaches 104 degrees, which is above our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. The landing gear of the laptop was noticeably warmer at 113 degrees, but because of its size, I doubt that many people are using the G701VI in their laps.

Conclusion

The Asus ROG G701VI is one of those laptops that must be seen to be believed. The system’s gray and orange design distinguishes it from the many laptops in red and black. But beyond aesthetics, this system is a real kick, with an Intel Kaby Lake processor of overclockable 7th generation and a GPU Nvidia GTX 1080 under its attractive chassis. That’s not enough, its pair of PCIe SSDs are among the fastest I’ve encountered, and you get a lovely screen with Nvidia G-Sync and 178-degree viewing angles.

Alienware 17 R5

In Alienware 17 R5, the company has made minor changes to the exterior design, creating a thinner chassis with even more personalized lighting possibilities. Design

Call it an intergalactic breakdown. In addition to the new hue, Alienware has added even more LED zones to the ready-to-use battalion, while making the system thinner with its new hinged design. First, the lighting. Alienware has added more modern areas, bringing the total to 13. You can choose your custom colors and effects on the revamped Alien Command Center.

For ports, you get a single USB 3.0 port on the right with another on the left. You’ll also find a USB Type-C port, headphone and microphone jacks, and a Noble Lock slot. Because of the front hinge design, you will see the majority of your ports in the back, including a Mini DisplayPort, HDMI 2.0, Thunderbolt 3, Ethernet, a power port and the proprietary port for the Alienware graphics amplifier.

Keyboard and TouchPad

While almost everyone has gone to the island with their game keyboards, Alienware has stayed true to its traditional layout – with good reason. With a keystroke of 2.2 millimeters and an actuation of 79 grams, the steel-reinforced TactX keyboard from the Alienware 17 far surpasses our minimum requirements (1.5 mm, 60 grams).

The 4 x 2.1-inch touchpad is huge and offers plenty of room for my fingers to skate and browse websites and documents – or summon Cortana with a three-finger press. I also had no problem running a two-finger scroll or a three-finger movie to scroll through open apps. My favorite part about Alienware touchpads is how they light up when you touch them. The pair of discrete mouse buttons was nice and elastic and delivered a nice click when pressed.

Display

Alienware typically offers a high-end display, and it does not disappoint with the all-new Alienware 17. The 17.3-inch matte anti-glare screen provides robust color and unmatched brightness with generous viewing angles. However, this 2560 x 1440 panel is not available in OLED as its 13-inch cousin, but it still has no problem delivering spectacular reds in the trailer from Black Klansman.

When measured for color reproduction, the Alienware 17 reaches 110% of the sRGB color gamut, surpassing the 100% minimum and 104% of the Eon17-X. However, it is running out of the average 131 percent premium gaming laptops as well as numbers set up by the Titan. Although it is not the brightest screen on the block, the Alienware 17 is undoubtedly among the most colorful. Striking 352 nits, the board overshadowed the 283-nits average. Its closest competitors did not break 300 nits.

Graphics and Performance

I have the power!!! Deceived with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU overclocked with 8GB of VRAM, I was expecting nothing but the highest frame rates, and the Alienware delivered. On 2560 x 1440, the frame fell to 65 fps. The frame rate jumped to 96 fps when I switched it to High at 1080p and dropped to an impressive 83 fps at 1440p.

This iteration of the Alienware 17 is the first in the series to break through Intel’s new 2.9GHz Core i9-8950HK processor with a whopping 32GB of RAM. And thanks to the Alien Command Center, you can overclock this bad boy at 5 GHz. I started running on Hulu while watching some of my favorite Steven Universe videos on YouTube. From there, I just started to launch tabs in Google Chrome, some running Slack, others running Twitch until I had 35 open tabs. Then I ran Windows Defender, and there was not a hiccup of this thing.

The Alienware 17’s 512 GB PCIe M12 SSD (with a 1 TB hard drive, 7200 rpm) duplicated 4.97 GB of media files in 9 seconds, binding the Eon17-X to 565.5 megabytes per second. That’s more than enough to dust off the average of 489.8 Mbps and the ASE X9 (1 TB PCIe SSD) of 424 Mbps. However, the Titan (512 GB NVMe SSD) landed a blistering 727 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

Despite all its great specifications, the Alienware 17 manages to be the last laptop on our battery test. It lasted around 3 hours and 47 minutes of continuous web browsing over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness, exceeding the average of 3:36 premium gaming laptop. The Titan and Eon17-X started early with times of 2:54, and 1:52, respectively.

The Alienware 17 manages to stay cool when you play or watch videos, thanks to its revamped cooling system, dubbed Alienware Cryo-Tech v2.0. The company was able to reduce the blade thickness of its fans by 50% and added a steam chamber on the processor to help keep things cool. I took the system temperature after 15 minutes of fighting against a cave troll in Witcher 3. The touchpad recorded 76 degrees Fahrenheit while the center of the keyboard reached 98 degrees, which is a little higher than our comfort threshold of 95 degrees.

Let the games begin! Or multitasking, or video editing or coding – heck, whatever you want to do, the Alienware 17 can deal with aplomb. You get a system that delivers ridiculous frame rates, a beautiful screen, a great audio system and Tobii Eye-tracking. The laptop is also not too bad on the multitasking front, thanks to its Intel 8th Gen overclockable processor, which you should overclock because the application is super easy to use.

Asus ROG Zephyrus

The first iteration of Zephyrus was revolutionary, combining innovative design with Nvidia’s low-power Max-Q GPU. This new Zephyrus M GM501 retains the superb, unique front chassis, but enhances aspects such as a keyboard, audio quality, and battery life (although it’s still a little too short). But Asus has also removed the gloves, giving its laptop one of the first processor Core i7 “Coffee Lake” of the 8th generation and a GPU Nvidia GTX 1070 full, allowing a bestial performance in a relatively thin.

Design

It’s a bit redux, but it’s not a bad thing. The Zephyrus is still a beautiful thing in its chassis and is crafted from brushed aluminum in a beautiful Asus color called Black Titanium. Like the original, the lid has two separate panels; one has vertical streaks while the other one has horizontal lines, which provides the laptop with a kind of two-color effect. A large chrome ROG emblem is on the left side of the lid and glows bright red when the laptop is switched on, which catches the eye.

Once you have finished staring at the lid, you will notice ROG printed on the back of the lid with the status lights, and part of the vent taking a peek inside the laptop. And just in case you forget how to spell Zephyrus, Asus stamped it with love on the back of the device’s system with a copper accent just beneath and around the sides of the system.

Need a USB 3.1 Type-A port? The Zephyrus has four, with three on the left and one on the right. You will also get a Thunderbolt 3 port on the right with a secure lock slot. On the left, you get an HDMI port, a microphone/headphone jack, and a power jack.

Keyboard and TouchPad

Typing on the new Zephyrus is much more comfortable than the old model. Asus judiciously returned the keyboard and touchpad to their traditional positions on the keyboard platform and added a keypad. The position switch gives the typists a wrist rest if needed, which makes typing much more comfortable. Asus also returned to the lab on Chiclet’s keys, with a key run of 1.5 millimeters, with an effort of 79 grams.

The Aura Core utility makes an appearance with some notable changes. You can now synchronize your color schemes with monitors, mice, and other Asus-enabled devices through the cloud. You can also control when the lights turn on and off and the brightness. However, Asus still does not give players complete control over the customization of lighting. You can customize only four designated zones, instead of individually programming each key that Razer and MSI allow. It’s a loss of the 16.8 million colors available.

The 4.1 x 2.3-inch touchpad is much more spacious than last year’s Zephyrus. Launching Cortana and the Action Center with Windows gestures like the three-finger and four-finger press were quick and responsive. Highlighting the text and the scrolling was helpful and accurate.

Display

Zephyrus’s 15.6-inch 1920 x 1080 matte screen is designed for gaming. Thanks to its Nvidia G-Sync technology, players will encounter little or no screen tear or latency. The technology synchronizes the panel with the GPU for an almost continuous refresh rate of 144Hz. The display is also great for watching movies or videos because it produces bright colors and fine details. And with its generous 178-degree viewing angles, you can position yourself just about anywhere in front of the notebook without the colors flipping or fading.

Based on our tests, the Zephyrus can reproduce 120% of the sRGB range. This result is below the average of 141 percent of premium gaming laptops, but well above the 100 percent that we would like to see. The Zephyrus’s matte screen missed the 288 nit average brightness category, reaching 286 nits. The Stealth, PowerSpec 1510 and Alienware 15 were much brighter at 293, 306 and 374 nits, respectively.

Graphics and Performance

The new Zephyrus avoids the Nvidia 1080 Max-Q GPU, instead of a true Nvidia GeForce 1070 GPU with 8GB of VRAM. It’s a step below 1080 Max-Q, but not much. The laptop had no issues keeping up with my sword fights and dodging when I pushed back a bear, averaging 70 frames per second (fps) on ultra at 1920 x 1080. The frame rate had increased when I lowered the settings to high at an average of 83 fps.

Intel 7th generation? So much for 2017. Say hello to the 8th generation with Zephyrus’ 3.9GHz Intel Core i7-8750H processor with 16GB of RAM. These new chips have six cores instead of four, which offer more performance than the previous generation. Despite opening 25 tabs in Google Chrome when running Windows Defender and watching Doctor Strange on Netflix, the Zephyrus showed no signs of slowing down.

Zephyrus’ 256 MB NVMe SSD duplicated 4.97 GB of media files in 10 seconds for a rate of 509 MBps, exceeding the category average of 504.5 Mbps. The Zephyrus beat the 1510 (256GB NVMe SSD), the Alienware 15 (512GB PCIe SSD) and the Stealth (512GB M.2 SSD), with scores of 391.5, 299.3 and 193.3 Mbps, respectively.

Battery Life and Heat

The battery life of the Zephyrus is longer than that of its predecessor, but it remains below the mark. The system lasted 2 hours and 47 minutes on our battery test, which includes surfing the web continuously over Wi-Fi at 150 nits of brightness. This time is short of the average of 3:36 and the stealth, which lasted an impressive 5:40.

With everything you will do regarding games and multitasking, the Zephyrus will not fail to heat, especially with a metal chassis. To counter this, Asus has brought back the AAS system (Active Aerodynamics System) that is designed with Nvidia. It consists of several pieces of equipment working in tandem. Asus re-equipped the fans, making the blades of a liquid crystal polymer that is 33% thinner than the previous model, allowing the company to pack in 71 blades instead of the usual 53.

Conclusion

Thanks to a mix of decent changes, the Zephyrus cemented its place as a first-rate gaming system. Asus has reorganized things about the laptop that could have made it difficult to sell to everyone except the advanced players – repositioning the keyboard, improving audio quality and extending battery life (a bit). The company has also found a way to add a full-fledged Pascal GPU and an 8th generation Intel processor, putting it on a par with some of the most extensive systems in its class. If you can buy it, the Zephyrus is an excellent choice for players looking for a slender and compelling gaming platform.

HP Omen 17

Now, it’s a good Omen. HP’s latest entry into its Omen notebook lineup gives the 17-inch gaming machine a drastic, but welcome, redesign. Instead of playing safely, the Omen 17 sports a bold look that will not fail to turn heads. And the shock and fear do not end there, as the company added Nvidia’s powerful GTX 1070 GPU and combined it with an equally robust Intel Core i7 processor and an incredibly fast SSD. The result is a laptop capable of providing showstopping performance if you play crisp games or numbers.

Design

HP gave the Omen 17 a much-needed design review. Instead of the carbon fiber-carbon sintered and safe exterior of previous versions, HP has chosen to be bold. It was the right decision. You will always have your carbon fiber on the lid; the most of the panel is made from the black material. The rest is made from brushed black plastic, eliminating the high-end look of HP.

The interior of the Omen 17 is black brushed aluminum and is cool to the touch. The large keyboard with its red keys is embedded in a shallow depression in the bridge. The power button, in the shape of a shining parallelogram, is in the upper left corner, leaving the bright red Omen in the center and the branding for Bang & Olufsen on the right. Under the keyboard is the silver touchpad. The best part of the interior is the little voodoo emblem placed along the telescope at the center of the bottom. He holds your gaze as if casting a spell.

Like most desktop replacements, the Omen 17 has ports, including 2 USB 3.0 ports on the right and a power jack. You’ll find another USB 3.0 port on the left with a Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0, mini DisplayPort, SD card slot, Gigabit Ethernet, headphone and microphone jacks, and a security lock slot.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The design of the Omen 17 is resolutely forward-looking, but in some ways, its keyboard is stuck in the past. I am disappointed that HP has not jumped on the customizable backlight train with the rest of its competition. Instead, I find myself with the backlit white keys that shine against the red keys. The keys are bright that you can see them in a dark frame, but it would have been good if HP had added a touch of color outside the typical black and red gamer. At least the W, A, S, D keys are red with white lettering to ensure that players can find them quickly.

The Omen 17 features a 1.5-millimeter keystroke and an actuation force of 68 grams, for a comfortable typing experience. Regarding the large palm rest, the 4 x 2.2-inch touchpad looks small. But he was tall enough to support my long fingers as I sailed on the desk. Gestures such as two-finger rotation and scrolling and three-finger scanning worked perfectly. The pair of discrete mouse buttons is a little too skinny for my taste but provided firm and elastic feedback.

Display

Get ready for a beautiful set of 3840 x 2160 17.3-inch matte color of the Omen 17. Looking at the short 4K Tears of Steel, I was blown away by the clarity of some of the details. For example, I could see strands of hair in the dreads of the laboratory as well as the dust accumulated in the folds of her white coat. I was also impressed by the overall dynamism of the scene, especially the pink and blue neon overlays featuring futuristic computers.

The Omen panel can reproduce 176% of the sRGB range. This means that it is brighter than the average office replacement of 130 percent. It’s also better than the Alienware 17 (113%) and the MSI Titan (175%). However, this matte screen is not as bright as I usually like it, even though it has exceeded the average of 291 nits. The Alienware 17 was much brighter at 340 while Titan was just 257 nits each.

Graphics and Performance

HP releases the big caliber with the Omen Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 GPU with 8 GB of VRAM. This means that this notebook is more than capable of providing high-performance players with high-end gaming computers, and it supports virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.

HP has equipped the Omen 17 with an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor clocked at 2.8 GHz and 32 GB of RAM. Although neither of them is overclockable, together they make quite the multitasking monster. I streamed an episode of BoJack Horseman on Netflix, with 30 other open Chrome tabs running a myriad of email and social media apps with some Twitch feeds. The system was not bothered because I did not see a hint of lag.

In our file copy test, the Omen 17 512 GB NVIDe M.2 PCIe SSD duplicated 4.97 GB of media files in 9 seconds for a transfer rate of 565 megabytes per second. This is impressive, particularly when compared to the average of 496.1 Mbps of the Alienware 17 (512GB PCIe SSD) 282 Mbps, and the MSI Titan (256GB M.2 SSD) 727 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

What is big and powerful and does not last long on a charge? If you have guessed the Omen 17, you are right. The laptop lasted only 2 hours and 18 minutes on our battery test, which includes surfing the web continuously over Wi-Fi. This is much shorter than the 3:36 average as well as the times by Alienware 17 (3:46) and MSI Titan (2:57). The new design of Omen 17 goes further than the exterior aesthetics.

HP has also done some touch-ups with the cooling system, adding a larger pair of fans with four heat pipes that allow better airflow. There is a little whistle when you start playing, but it’s not too distracting. I spent 15 minutes fighting bandits in Witcher 3. After that, I measured key points on the notebook, including the touchpad, which recorded a cool 78 degrees Fahrenheit temperature. The center of the keyboard and the landing gear were considerably warmer at 103 and 102 degrees, respectively. However, thanks to the plastic bottom, I never felt uncomfortable using the Omen 17 on my lap.

That’s what I’m talking about! After several iterations of Omens with beautiful and secure designs and mid-level specifications, HP puts caution in the wind. The HP Omen 17 of $ 1,899 has an avant-garde design that is a real trigger of conversation. But beyond the new look is a 4K screen, a high-speed SSD, an Intel Core i7 processor and a GPU Nvidia GTX 1070, which makes it a real game engine and multitasking.

Dell Inspiron 15 7000

VR-ready gaming platform can put a hole in your pocket, but it does not have to do it. The Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop is lightweight on the wallet and offers a solid performance for the price. The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU on this notebook can boost virtual reality games and experiences and has a much longer lifespan than its competitors. But the Dell screen, although better than previous models, is even weaker than competitors, and its keyboard is not fun to type. But if you can forget about these flaws, you will get a lot for the price.

Design

The Inspiron maintains the black and red design you see on almost any gaming notebook but depending on the color you choose; you get either something incredibly unobtrusive or something colorful and proud. Our examination unit was a matte black professional model, with a soft-touch lid bearing the Dell logo in a bright red. The rear, featuring a series of vents, comes in straight, gray plastic lines. It’s not as fun as the cobweb accents of the previous year.

The interior maintains this pattern, with a soft black deck, an island-style keyboard with red lettering and backlight, and a touchpad surrounded by a crimson border. The power button in the top left corner also serves as a fingerprint reader. On the sides, you’ll find just about every port you’ll need for peripherals and monitors. On the left, there is a Noble lock slot, an Ethernet jack, a USB 3.0 port and an SD card slot. The right houses the headphone jack, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 port, and an HDMI output.

Keyboard and TouchPad

This keyboard has only 1.2 millimeters of displacement and requires a heavyweight of 79 grams of actuation to press the keys, so I found myself thoroughly steadily. Typing is not a pleasant experience. The keyboard is placed too far back. I have this problem on most Dell Inspiron laptops (I’d rather have a slightly shorter trackpad), and when this placement is associated with the shallow keyboard, the experience is just uncomfortable.

The touchpad is 4.1 x 3.1 inches, which is nice and roomy but more significant than any reasonable person needs. It’s plastic, so it does not feel as good as metal or glass touchpads, but it’s accurate when you’re navigating and use gestures like pinching to zoom in and tap four fingers to reach the Action Center. Windows 10.

Display

The original model of the Dell Inspiron Gaming laptop had a horrible display. Thank God Dell has improved the panel this time. The 15.6-inch 1080p display is still not the best on the market, but switching to an IPS panel gives you more accurate colors and wider viewing angles. When I watched the Black Panther trailer, I found that the screen was sharp, and I could see all the intricate designs on the T’Challa costume.

The Inspiron panel covers 70% of the sRGB color gamut, which is below the overall average (102%), as well as the Strix (113%) and Predator (81%) indexes, which have more rich colors. The Legion, however, is duller, at only 68%. On our light meter, the Inspiron’s screen averaged 233 nits, lower than the average (253 nits) and the Strix display (297 nits). But the Predator (226 nits) and the Legion (220 nits) are even darker.

Graphics and Performance

The Inspiron comes with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with a Max-Q design and 6GB of VRAM. It’s powerful enough to play games with high settings, but you’ll need to lower some game settings to get the best frame rates. Max-Q cards allow for quieter and lighter laptops, but also less potent than an ordinary GTX 1060.

With an Intel Core i5-7300U 2.5GHz processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, the Inspiron can be used to work as much as for the game. With 30 open tabs, including an Overwatch streaming of Twitch, the laptop showed no sign of lag.
