1Processor

The most critical portable component for video editors is the CPU. Most applications are optimized to have the advantage of modern multi-core processors, which usually means that the more hearts you have, the better. Fortunately, even some of Intel’s mobile U-Series Core processors, designed to use less power than their desktop counterparts, now have four cores. To get an overview of how a higher number of processors increases performance, you’ll want to see how much of the notebook you plan to offer is on our Cinebench benchmark, listed in the Performance section of each review. This test uses Maxon titan video effects software to spit out a proprietary partition based on how fast the PC can render a 3D image. Although many factors can influence the score, in general, the more cores the processor has, the faster the speed.

2RAM

The problem with selecting a multicore processor is that the manufacturers do not always indicate the number of cores on the box or product page of the website. Fortunately, finding how much memory the system has is a lot easier. A good rule is that you have to select a laptop with 16 GB of RAM. For many ultraportable consumer devices and all current Mac laptops, this is the maximum limit, although you can now order 32 GB mobile workstations. The cost is often important, however, and we believe that money is better spent on a faster processor, so we call 16GB the sweet spot.

3Fast SSD Storage

To complete the third tier of main specifications, you will need a fast hard drive. In most cases, means setting up a laptop with an SSD, which can access data much faster than older readers. For everyday computing use, the difference in speed between an SSD and a spinning disk is vast, as the primary skill of a hard disk reduces boot times and speeds up application loading. These things do not matter as much for video editing, but an SSD will still offer noticeable speed gains on specialized tasks like playing multiple clips at once or working with the 4K video.

4Graphics

Most laptops come with a graphics card that is part of the processor. This arrangement offers lamentable performance if you play richly detailed video games, but it is fine for many video editing scenarios. As mentioned earlier, almost all video editing suites are designed to take advantage of more powerful processors, but graphics acceleration is not as standard.

There are some exceptions. For example, a discrete GPU can speed up the video encoding process in Final Cut Pro X, and the newest version of Blackmagic’s Davinci Resolve editing suite has an all new video playback engine optimized for powerful GPUs. In fact, the Linux version of Davinci supports up to eight individual GPUs. Since the most significant number of graphics cards we’ve ever seen in a laptop is two (and it’s on gaming platforms that cost around $ 5,000), it’s better to save the editing tasks accelerated by the GPU.

That said, if the laptop you’re considering offers a discrete entry-level GPU for a reasonable premium (say around $ 200), there’s little reason not to do it and take advantage of extra speed when you are exporting video. 5Portability

If you are already carrying dozens of pounds of cameras and lighting, the last thing you need is to add weight to your bag. Fortunately, many very powerful laptops weigh less than 3 pounds these days. The thinnest and lightest will not have discrete GPUs or screens larger than 14 inches, but you might be able to do without such features, particularly if you have a studio with a more powerful editing station.

If you are slimming, try not to lose ports. We recommend at least one Thunderbolt 3 port, that allows you to connect to external displays via the DisplayPort standard, high-speed external drives, and virtually any USB device such as an external mouse or keyboard via an adapter. Some laptops, including all MacBook Pro models, only include Thunderbolt 3, which is a bit extreme since the standard is still relatively new. The access point is one or two Thunderbolt ports, and one or two standard USB 3.0/3.1 ports.

An SD card slot can also be important for transferring images directly from your camera to your laptop, and thankfully, all laptops have an audio port for connecting headphones to use when editing on the plane or in a coffee shop.

6Display Size and Resolution

With many laptops offering at least Full HD resolution (1920 by 1080), your main screen should be the size, not the number of pixels. A display of 15 or 17 inches will allow you to see more of the timeline of your project, but it comes down to the price of weight and weight. Meanwhile, a 12-inch screen like the one on the Apple MacBook could make you squint. The sweet spot is therefore 13 or 14 inches. On the other hand, a 15-inch model with a quad-core processor and a 2 TB SSD will cost nearly $ 4,200. The price range for Windows 10 laptops is a bit broader. You can find a 13-inch quad-core PC with 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD for just under $ 2,000, while a 17-inch gaming device with a high-end GPU or workstation with a Xeon processor can easily ring at $ 5,000.

Design

Apple’s high-end laptop looks more like a MacBook Air nowadays, with incredibly thin edges that measure just 0.61 inches. The sleek aluminum chassis of the MacBook Pro is easy to carry at 4lbs, but it remains rugged and sturdy enough to make you feel like it’s all done for serious work. I dug out the Space Gray color of our device, but there is also an excellent Silver option for those who prefer lighter shades.

However, the sheer thinness of the MacBook Pro is at the expense of convenience. The laptop’s port selection consists entirely of four USB-C connections (as well as a headphone jack), which protect it for the latest accessories, but makes it almost impossible to use.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The keyboard of the MacBook continues to scare me by offering superficial touches that seem better than those I used on a laptop. Whether I scoured a Google Doc or broadcast a quick e-mail, everything was wonderfully bright and comfortable. Despite a short path of 0.81 millimeters, the keys allowed me to type comfortably.

I still have trouble believing that the Force Touch trackpad on the laptop does not have a real click button because the haptic feedback it provides is incredibly satisfying. Trackpad-sensitive functions, such as hitting a website for a preview, were all intuitive. While the touchpad is comically huge at 6.1 x 3.8 inches, it has left me plenty of room to navigate web pages and perform gesture-based shortcuts comfortably.

Although I still would not call the Touch Bar of the MacBook Pro essential, it does a lot of neat stuff – and is just a ton of fun to use. Replacing the standard row of function keys, the touch bar is an LED strip whose controls will change depending on the application you use. I made the most of the touch bar while flipping through Safari’s tabs – it was nice to see a visual overview of every page I opened.

I also appreciated the fact that the bar provides auto-pop-up options every time I typed, and it was easy to fast-forward and rewind a video just by sliding my finger. Creative users could get a ton of use on the touch bar once they’ve mastered it. Like you can adjust the volume settings of each GarageBand instrument in a few clicks or quickly split clips in iMovie without using the touchpad.

Display

The latest 15-inch and 2500 x 1600 MacBook Pro Retina display are predictably beautiful. The text on the screen looked thick and handwritten, and the snow-capped mountains of the Sierra in the default background of the laptop were surprisingly realistic. The laptop made a beautiful centerpiece for the latest Wonder Woman trailer. Each shot of fire erupted in color, from the flowery fields that a young Prince Diana rode her horse to the fiery battlefields where she defeated the wicked as an adult.

The impressive color performance of the MacBook Pro was confirmed by our lab tests, in which the notebook reproduced 126.4% of the sRGB color gamut. This makes it both more colorful and precise than the HP Specter x360 (113), but not quite as dynamic as the Dell XPS 15 (188). The Pro recorded an ultra-bright brightness of 460 nits on our light meter, surpassing the XPS 15 (282 nits), the Specter x360 (255 nits) and our average for traditional notebooks (275).

Graphics and Performance

I already knew that the MacBook Pro would be a multitasking beast – the laptop has gnawed my heavy routine of running a dozen Chrome tabs and five Twitch streams while downloading an app and streaming music. But how much hump does he get from his new Core i7 Kaby Lake Series CPU? The MacBook Pro’s 512GB SSD has copied approximately 5GB of files in just 7.6 seconds, for a blazing transfer rate of 653.9Mbps. This outweighs the 512GB SSD of the XPS 15 (339.28), the 512GB SSD of the Specter x360 (282.13) and our average (302.84).

Packing discrete Radeon 560 graphics, the MacBook Pro is well-equipped for intensive graphics tasks as well as some light games. The laptop was running the Dirt 3 racing game at 76.49 frames per second, surpassing last year’s Radeon 455 model (60 frames per second) and the Specter x360 (29 frames per second, GeForce 940MX), as well then our regular laptop (53 fps).

Design

Dell has not changed the design of the XPS 15 in recent years, so the latest model does not look so different from the last. It’s still a clean, functional design that’s rock-solid, but I’m hoping Dell will change things next year just for the sake of novelty. The XPS 15 has a silver aluminum lid with the Dell logo in black but is entirely spartan. Lifting the lid reveals the 15.6-inch InfinityEdge 4K display with almost no bezel around the top and sides.

Black platinum surrounds the island-style backlit keyboard with a soft touch. The tapered design of the XPS 15 allows only a few ports on either side, but the machine holds in all the essentials. On the left side, you’ll find a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI output, a Thunderbolt 3 and a headphone, microphone combo jack. The right houses a Kensington lock slot, a USB 3.0 port, and an SD card reader.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The XPS 15’s keyboard is flat, but it’s roomy enough to be used without stumbling. It has 1.4 millimeters of travel and requires 50 grams of force to support. While I did not find myself thoroughly, I typed a little slower than usual. The 4.1 x 3.1-inch trackpad is of superior quality and supports the precision gestures of Windows 10. It was natural to use three fingers to switch from one program to another and press four fingers to open the Action Center.

Display

The XPS 15’s 15.6-inch 4K screen is so bright, vivid and precise that I would be entirely comfortable using it with Netflix, feature films, games or any other need without worrying about an external monitor. When I watched the 4K Tears of Steel movie, I was seduced by bright colors, such as purple, blue and green lights emitted by holographic computers. The hues were so bright that they were jumping on the black and gray walls of the lab in close-ups.

I could see the pores on the faces of the characters. Dell’s panel covers an astonishing 188 percent of the sRGB color gamut (we consider that anything above 100 percent is excellent). The overall average is only 94%, while the Specter and the Prestige cover respectively 113% and 133% of the range. The screen of the XPS 15 is nice and bright, measuring an average of 282 nits on our light meter. It beat the average (275 nits), as well as the scores of Specter (255 nits) and Prestige (192 nits).

Graphics and Performance

Featuring a 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 512GB PCIe SSD, the XPS 15 is a multitasking rock star. I opened 40 tabs in Chrome, including one streaming this week with John Oliver, and the XPS did not even transpire while I was navigating.

The XPS 15 does not look like a gaming laptop, but it has chops for entry-level gaming thanks to its Nvidia GeForce 1050 GPU with 4GB of VRAM. I played at Battlefield 1 at 1080p and high settings, and the game ran between 50 and 60 frames per second while I was flying a British Royal Flying Corps plane along the Vosges in the east of the La France. The display shone; the sky was a bright blue, and sunlight bounced off the snowcaps. I could not use 4K resolution because the GPU 1050 does not have the power to push that amount of pixels.

Battery Life and Heat

Despite its 4K screen and Nvidia Pascal GPU, the XPS 15 will last the majority of the day. It ran for 8:23 on the Battery Test, easily exceeding the average of mainstream notebooks (6:50) and Prestige time (4:13). The Specter, which also has a 4K screen but an old Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU lasted 8:36.

The XPS 15 stayed remarkably cool during our heat test. After streaming 15 minutes of Full-HD video from YouTube, the bottom of the notebook reached 79 degrees Fahrenheit, the middle of the keyboard (between the G and H keys) registered 86 degrees, and the touchpad registered 80 degrees. All of these temperatures are below our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. When I played Battlefield 1 and taxed the GPU GTX 1050, the XPS 15 became much hotter, reaching 121 degrees down, 111 degrees in the center of the keyboard and 90 degrees on the touchpad.

Conclusion

The Dell XPS 15 is a high-end 15-inch notebook with an incredible screen and stable performance, as well as enough power for some games, assuming you do not get the basic model. The keys could be more tactile, but they are not a breaker. Overall, the XPS 15 is a standout device. Its 4K display is one of the best I’ve ever seen (to get better, you have to go OLED); you can play games, and even if the design is safe, it is sturdy and has a comfortable bridge and soft to the touch. Design

You might not notice looking, but yes, it’s a brand new laptop. From the outside, the Surface Book 2 has not changed much since its previous iteration, and it retains its most prominent tower: detach from the keyboard to turn into a tablet. It’s still gray magnesium with a reflective Windows logo stamped on the lid. And, in the tradition of the surface book, it does not close, prevented from doing so by its pivot hinge.

Lifting the lid reveals the 3: 2, 13.5-inch, 3000 x 2000 PixelSense display. While Microsoft told us that the hinge is stronger than that of the first generation Surface Book, the game would still flop a little on my lap. The turntable and keyboard are made of the same clean, gray plastic that, while attractive, draws your attention to the screen more than anything else.

The Surface Book 2 is a bit light on the ports compared to its rivals. On its left are a pair of USB 3.1 ports and an SD card reader, and the right has a USB Type-C port and a proprietary Surface Connect port. There is another Surface Connect port at the bottom of the tablet so that you can load it independently. The headphone/microphone jack is on the right side of the tablet, which is annoying because you will have a little space.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The Surface Book 2’s keyboard is on the shallow side, with only 1.2 millimeters of travel and 70g required to press. Despite this, the keys feel good, with an appropriate clickiness that makes them pleasant to type on. Microsoft’s 4.1 x 2.7 pad is smooth and uses the precise drivers the company has designed for Windows, so it’s no surprise this touchpad recognizes gestures instantly. Whether it’s scrolling through the web browser or running Cortana, it worked every time.

The Surface Pen ($ 99.99, sold separately) is still the best stylus on the market. It is almost gap-free, has a pressure sensitivity of 4096 degrees, and has shaded slopes. It is supposed to attach magnetically only to the left side of the Surface Book 2 tablet (although it can be attached on either side to the 15-inch model), but I found that it sometimes connects to magnets in the base when I put the stylus on my desk.

Display

The display on the Microsoft Surface Book 2 is always the best in its category. The screen 3: 2, 3000 x 2000 13.5 inches is sharp, bright and very colorful. When I watched the open-source 4K film Tears of Steel, blue, orange, green and purple holograms shone in a black lab, and I could see ivy leaves on columns. The screen covers an impressive 130 percent of the sRGB color gamut, bound only by the Miix.

The ultraportable average is lower at 100%, while the XPS 13 reproduces 112% of the sRGB range and the Spectre covers 109%. Surface Book 2 measured 374 nits of brightness, well above the average of 275 nits, as well as scores of XPS 13 (368 nits), Miix (361 nits) and Spectre (313 nits).

Graphics and Performance

With an Intel Core i7-8650U processor, 8GB of RAM, a 256GB SSD and a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 GPU with 2GB VRAM, the Surface Book 2 has plenty of energy for multitasking. I had 25 tabs open in Google Chrome, including one streaming a Full-HD clip from the Daily Show with Trevor Noah while drawing in the Sketch of Windows Ink Workspace, and I didn’t notice any lag.

Surface Book 2 transferred 4.97 GB of files in 2 seconds, for a bitrate of 203.6 Mbps. It is equal to the speed of the Miix 720 but behind the average (230.66 Mbps). The XPS 13 (508MBps) and the Spectre x360 (565.5MBps) were both much faster. The GTX 1050 GPU of the machine with 2 GB of VRAM can play some games, but not on the highest settings. It ran Rise of Tomb Raider on a mix of high and medium settings and anti-aliasing SMAA at 33 fps. This card will also give you a boost in Photoshop or other graphics rendering programs.

Battery Life and Heat

With its attached base, the Surface Book 2 will work all day and then some. It lasted for 13 hours and 7 minutes on the Battery Test, which surfs the web continuously over Wi-Fi at a fixed brightness. The Surface Book 2 overtakes the XPS 13, which lasted 12 hours and 37 minutes but did not have a touchscreen. The average is 6:50, and the Spectre lasted 8:26, but the Miix went out after 5:37. Design

Many of Asus’ premium notebooks are a beautiful navy blue, but the ZenBook Pro projects a striking black profile. I like change, as the laptop straddles the line between premium and professional. The lid still features the iconic concentric circles typical of ZenBook, but the Asus logo, usually in gold and silver, is now bright and shines with the backlighting of the display on the other side.

A thin bezel surrounds the screen, and the island-style keyboard is flanked by speakers on both sides, integrated into the aluminum turntable. The ZenBook Pro retains a full set of ports for current and old devices. The left side of the laptop has an HDMI output and two Thunderbolt 3 ports, while the right has two USB 3.0 ports, a micro-SD card slot, and a microphone/headphone jack.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The ZenBook’s keyboard is better than its 1.2 mm of travel might suggest. With 63 grams of force needed to operate, the keys are deep enough; they do not have as much resistance as I want. I watched the Star Wars trailer: The Last Jedi, and I could see every point of Luke Skywalker’s cloak. When TIE fighters chased the Millennium Falcon, green lasers jumped against the dark walls of a cave.

The ZenBook Pro’s display covers 122% of the sRGB color gamut, making this notebook livelier than the regular notebook (100%) and the Yoga 720 (114%), though the MacBook Pro (126%) %) and XPS 15 (amazing). 188 percent were even more colorful. The Asus laptop measured an average of 271 nits of brightness on our light meter. It’s almost equal to the category average (2750 nits) and almost tied to Yoga’s score (272 nits), but the XPS 15 (282 nits) is brighter, and the MacBook Pro (460 nits) is in a league when it’s about brightness.

Graphics and Performance

The ZenBook Pro has muscle. It is equipped with Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core and 2.8 GHz processor, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti GPU with 4GB VRAM memory, 16GB RAM and 512 PCIe SSD. Go. Unsurprisingly, he handled 30 open tabs in Chrome, including an episode of “The Daily Show with Trevor Noah”.

Design

There is just something about a Razer laptop that makes the pulse pick up a bit when you see it. Built from black CNC aluminum, the Blade Pro follows the Razer design to a T, just on a larger scale. The center of the laptop’s lid is slightly recessed, creating a pair of subtle ridges that help accentuate the glittering emerald three-headed snake emblem.

The interior of the system offers more ebony foil, with the center of the deck housing the standard keyboard and the touchpad large enough in a slightly recessed compartment. A power button is at the top center of the device; you dare to press it. The Blade Pro is not loaded with ports like other desktop replacements, but what it has is vital for multi-screen configurations and virtual reality. Along the right is a USB 3.0 port, Thunderbolt 3, a card reader, an HDMI 2.0 port and a Kensington security lock slot. There are two other USB 3.0 ports on the left with a Gigabit Ethernet port, a headphone jack, and a proprietary power jack.

Keyboard and TouchPad

I’m always on the fence when it comes to Razer keyboards. They are notoriously shallow, which can be a little uncomfortable at first, but manageable once you get used to it. The ultra-low profile Pro blade blades have only 1 millimeter of key travel (between 1.5 and 2 mm is ideal) with 71 grams of actuation (60 grams is the minimum). However, these ultra-low switches are comfortable and offer a nice click when you start typing.

Like the previous models, the Blade Pro’s massive 4 x 3.3-inch touchpad is located to the right of the keyboard, which takes a bit of getting used to. But once I was adjusted, I had no problem invoking Cortana, zooming in and out of the photos, scrolling on two fingers and turning on the device. The programmable scroll wheel continues to be one of my favorite components of the blade. For example, to adjust the volume, push the wheel up or down.

Display

Looking at the 4K panel of the Pro Blade is like looking into a color fever dream. Nvidia G-Sync technology made Geralt’s white and white hair realistically cascade over his broad shoulders as he ran to a group of flesh-eating Ghouls in Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. For players who appreciate high-resolution fluid graphics, the Blade Pro is also available in Full HD (1920 x 1080), a first for this iteration of a desktop replacement. Instead of a very high resolution, the 1080p panel has a refresh rate of 120Hz. It’s not Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, but you should still get nice graphics.

The splash of color comes from the Pro’s ability to reproduce 178 percent of the sRGB range, which is well above the average of 100 percent desktop replacement and the Alienware 113 percent. 17 and G701VI. The Predator 17 X and the Eon 17-X were even brighter, with results of 182 and 192 percent, respectively. The 1080p Blade Pro did not disappoint, with a range of 126 percent.

You’ll never have a problem viewing the Blade Pro screen, because the 1080p and 4K displays average glowing scores of 334 and 320 nits of brightness, respectively. They easily surpassed the 275-nit average, the Predator 17 X (with 318 nits), the Eon17-X (with 289 nits) and the G701VI (with 277 nits). The Alienware has the brightest display in the country, at 340 nits.

Graphics and Performance

Do not compare the thinness of the Pro blade to weakness. On the contrary, one of these slender stunners is equipped with a GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 with 8 GB of VRAM, the most powerful GPU that you can get in a laptop. Meanwhile, the 1080p version switches a GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6 GB of VRAM. This means that when it was time for me to empty a swamp of fog in Witcher 3, the 4K laptop maintained a stable frame rate of 37 frames per second on the Ultra settings while the GTX 1060 delivered an acceptable 30 fps.

The Blade Pro officially plays with the big boys, moving from the latest Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor to an Intel Core i7-7820HK clocked at 2.9 GHz with 32GB of RAM. The 1080p model also benefited from an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor clocked at 2.8 GHz with 16 GB of RAM. So, none of my laptops had any problem with me running some Twitch feeds, with TweetDeck, Slack, and YouTube in the rest of my 20 Chrome tabs while the system was running a full virus scan.

The 256GB 4k Blade Pro PCIe SSD pair in RAID 0 configuration duplicated 4.97 GB of media content on our file copy test in 15 seconds; this corresponds to a transfer rate of 339 megabytes per second. It’s not as fast as the average of 540.3 Mbps, but it’s even better than the 228 Mbps rate of Alienware 17 (512GB SSD) and the 1080p Blade Pro (256MB SSD PCIe hard drive). 2 TB 7,200 rpm) 175.5 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

With specifications like these, you will take a hit on the battery life. The Pro Blade only lasted 1 hour and 54 minutes on our battery test (regular web browsing over Wi-Fi), which is well below the average of 6:50. Razer’s has retained its unique cooling system with a hidden internal fan, a steam chamber, and a dynamic heat exchanger, keeping the entire aluminum chassis cool. The company has also added copper-based cooling fins and other heat spreaders to accommodate overclockable components. But no matter how cool Razer is, it’s hard to keep an all-metal chassis. After 15 minutes of playing through Witcher 3, the touchpad measured 101 degrees Fahrenheit, several degrees on our 95-degree comfort threshold. The center of the system reached 119 degrees, while the landing gear measured 121 degrees.

Conclusion

The Razer Blade Pro was already a great laptop for gaming, virtual reality, and content creation. The desktop replacement delivered a stunning 4K Nvidia G-Sync display, great graphics and overall performance in one of the thinnest and lightest chassis we’ve seen on a system of this size. This time, Razer improved on some things, moving to an overclocked Intel Core i7 “Kaby Lake” processor and adding THX certification to its display and audio – making it the first mobile device to hold the title.

Design

From its glossy lid and deck to the stylish HP logo, the machined aluminum ZBook Studio G4 is worth the money. Unfortunately, HP abandoned the G3 Studio’s dot matrix pattern, which helped this model stand out. The ZBook Studio G4 has ports for days. Its left side has an Ethernet jack, two USB 3.0 ports, and an SD card slot, while its right side has two Thunderbolt 3 connectors, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI output port and a headphone jack.

Also, its sliding fingerprint reader ($24, optional) is located under the right corner of the keyboard. Comparatively, it’s the best port selection you’ll get on this group of professional-grade laptops.

The keys require a force of 71 grams, but the switches are slightly shallow, with a vertical stroke of 1.5 millimeters, which corresponds to the lower end of 1.5 to 2 mm of a notebook of this size. The ZBook Studio G4’s 4.5 x 3.1-inch touchpad delivers precise input tracking and a solid feel with every click. He also quickly accepted the three-finger navigation gestures of Windows 10 to change apps and show all windows.

Display

The ZBook Studio G4 that we tested owes its brilliant colors and crisp images to HP’s award-winning DreamColor technology. This is a $ 350 upgrade that includes a touch screen of 3840 x 2160 pixels from the stock option 1920 x 1080 pixels, and photo and video editors will support this screen. When I watched the 4K Tears of Steel movie on the laptop, I noticed an incredibly wide range of greens for invading flora around a building, along with some very vibrant purple lasers.

Emitting up to 301 nits, the ZBook Studio G4 is relatively bright, exceeding the 275-nit category average. The Precision 5520 335-nit and the MacBook Pro 460-nit shine even more. However, the Studio G4’s screen does not offer the best viewing angles because I saw the color darken at 30 degrees.

Graphics and Performance

The configuration of the ZBook Studio G4 that we tested is equipped with a 7th generation Intel Kaby Lake Xeon 1535M v6 processor and 32GB of RAM, making it perfect for advanced users. I did not see any lag after splitting my screen between a 1080p streaming YouTube video and 15 Chrome tabs (including Slack, Google Docs, and TweetDeck).

The ZBook Studio’s 512GB HP Z USB Drive TurboDrive has duplicated 4.97 GB of multimedia files in 9 seconds, for a rate of 565.4 MBps. This exceeds the 208 Mbps category average and 462.7 Mbps of the Precision 5520 (512 GB M.2 PCIe SSD) but can not reach the 654 Mbps of the MacBook Pro (512 GB PCIe SSD).

The Nvidia Quadro M1200 graphics card from the ZBook Studio gave it a score of 145,911 on the 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited test. The ZBook Studio will not allow VR tournaments or Tekken 7 tournaments, but it will meet modest game needs. He ran dirt 3 (set to medium graphics, 1080p resolution) at a smooth 45 per second. While this exceeds our soft threshold of 30 fps, it is below the 57 fps and 76 fps average of the MacBook Pro.

Design

The Predator’s aluminum and plastic design is no stranger to the look of other low-cost Acer laptops; its black metal cover is adorned with two red bands framing the Predator logo. There is a plastic bumper on the top of the lid that feels a lot cheaper than the aluminum around it. When you lift the lid, you’ll see the 15.6-inch 1080p screen, surrounded by a bezel with the Predator logo below and the Acer logo at the top left.

This second logo is distracting, and I wish Acer had the confidence to let the Predator brand fend for itself, as Dell does with Alienware and Asus with its Republic of Gamers line. There is also a full keyboard with a numeric keypad using the red backlight and the red WASD keys, along with a black metal bridge. As any good game notebook should, the Predator has a lot of ports. On the left side are an Ethernet jack, an HDMI output, a USB Type-C port, USB 3.0 port and an SD card slot. A headphone jack and a pair of USB 2.0 ports are located on the right side of the laptop.

Keyboard and TouchPad

The Predator’s keyboard is comfortable, but I would like it to be more responsive. The keys have 1.6 millimeters of vertical movement, so I never felt like I was going down. But the keys need 79 grams of pressure to activate them, which prevented them from feeling the light and running away. However, it did not took long to get used to the extra weight. There are some quirks on the keyboard. The Shift key and the up key are very close to each other – much closer than the other two keys on the keyboard – and the right arrow key takes up space in the numeric keypad.

The 4.1 x 3-inch touchpad is spacious, precise and responsive to Windows 10 gestures; I had no problem pinching myself to zoom or scan my Windows. I had to click a little harder than I usually expected, although, for games, most players use a dedicated gaming mouse anyway.

Display

The 15.6-inch, 1080p screen on the Predator, is sharp but otherwise dull. When I watched the trailer for Marvel’s Inhumans, Medusa’s red hair did not stand out on her lavender gown, and bright lights crushed Black Bolt and Jellyfish in a scene together. It was not as vivid as I would have loved, but it was perfectly usable. I had a similar experience in Mass Effect: Andromeda. In the dark areas, I wanted to increase the brightness, but in the lighter parts of the game, I could see well. Some lights in a space battle seemed more orange than red, but they seemed accurate.

The Predator display covers 81% of the sRGB color gamut, outperforming the Legion (68%) but falling below average (100%), Strix (122%) and Leopard Pro (165%) notebooks. The screen measures 226 nits of average brightness on our photometer, lower than the average (275 nits), the Strix (269 nits) and the Leopard Pro (245 nits), but brighter than the Legion (220 nits).

Graphics and Performance

The Predator is equipped with a 2.8-GHz Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD, that is enough for some multitasking. I had 30 tabs open in Chrome while watching a 1080p stream on Twitch, and I did not see any delays. It took the Predator 27 seconds to copy 4.97 GB of media files, giving a rate of 188.5 megabytes per second. The average is 207.6 Mbps, while Legion (363.5 Mbps) and Leopard Pro (565.5 Mbps) were both faster. The Strix (94.2 Mbps) came in a distant last place.

Predator’s Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU with 6GB of VRAM is a safe bet, and it has shown its power in our performance tests. When I played Mass Effect: Andromeda on ultra 1080AA settings with anti-aliasing FXAA, the game ran between 70 and 80 fps during the battle and sometimes dropped to 64 fps in interactive cutscenes.

Battery Life and Heat

This is a gaming laptop that has lasted a lot longer than expected. It lasted 6 hours and 48 minutes on the Mag Laptop Battery Test, which surfs the web continuously over Wi-Fi. This is almost equal to the average (6:50), but other laptops tend not to get closer to that. The Leopard Pro, for example, only supported 2:32, while the Legion (3:39) and Strix (3:41) also went out much earlier than the Predator.

When it’s not playing, the Predator stays nice and cool under simple workloads. After streaming HD videos from YouTube for 15 minutes, the bottom of the notebook was barely 88 degrees Fahrenheit; the keyboard between the G and H keys measures 84.5 degrees; and the touchpad was 79.5 degrees. All of these temperatures are below our comfort threshold of 95 degrees. But things get warmer when you start playing: The bottom climbs to 113.5 degrees, and the keyboard reaches 104.5 degrees. However, the touchpad remained cool at 83.5 degrees.

Conclusion

The Acer Predator Helios 300 is a powerful gaming machine, ready for virtual reality, which costs several hundred dollars less than expected. Acer has cut some corners with the display to get there, but its easy scalability makes it a laptop on which you can continue to play in the long run. The life of the battery also impressed us. Many companies sell laptops that are strong values. And the Acer Helios Predator 300 is the real deal.

Design

Adorned with gold accents and handsome without being ostentatious, the Stealth Thin is the Bond girl of gaming laptops. The entire laptop chassis is crafted from matte sandblasted black aluminum alloy. Instead of the traditional sigil red and white backlit dragon logo, MSI uses a Midas touch, replacing it with an emblem printed in black and gold. A thin golden band cut into the diamond borders the top of the lid. The company has also added gold to the side vents for an elegant flash of color. The interior of the laptop is majestic, with black aluminum. The power button and touchpad are lined with gold, with a glossy and golden keyboard.

Although I am a fan of the overall appearance, my favorite part of the interior is the vent mounted on the top, with its delicate floral patterns. While the Stealth framework is really thin, it still has a lot of ports. On the right is a USB 3.1 Type-A, Thunderbolt 3, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI and power jack. You’ll find a pair of USB 3.1 Type-A, Gigabit Ethernet ports, a secure lock slot, a microphone/headphone jack, and an S/PDIF jack for quality audio.

Keyboard and TouchPad

Usually, with such a slim laptop, the keyboard keys are shallow. Not so with stealth. In spite of what we like to see for the keys (1.4 millimeters instead of 1.5 to 2 mm), the insular type keys have a strong force actuation of 77 grams. As a result, the keys are surprisingly elastic. Although I enjoy MSI’s 24K magic with the keyboard, I’m happy to see that the company is still working with SteelSeries to provide 16.7 million colors in its SteelSeries Engine software.

In this way, I can create my custom color scheme, because what is gold without some gems? And since each key has its lighting, you can get as granular as you want and choose colors and effects for each key. In addition to making the keyboard pure, the SteelSeries Engine 3 software allows you to create macros. And once you have completed the customization and programming, you can also define which applications will be launched with your new configuration.

Display

The Stealth’s 15.6-inch screen is available in 1920 x 1080 resolution. But while I wanted a QHD or 4K version, I appreciated the 144 Hertz refresh rate, which should help reduce the tears and the latency of the screen. I also marveled at the incredibly bright colors, like the pink and green holographic controls of the Tears of Steel shorts. The details were clear enough that I could see the scales in a snakeskin jacket as well as the dirt and grime that lay in the cracks and crevices of the well-worn red garment.

So much dynamism! The Stealth can reproduce 150% of the sRGB color gamut – a performance that beats not only the 100% average but also the Zephyrus (120%), the Alienware 15 (114%) and the 1510 (113%). The Stealth panel averaged 293 nits when we measured brightness, exceeding the 275-nits average score. It’s brighter than the Zephyrus (286 nits), but far from 1510 (306 nits) and Alienware 15 (374 nits).

Graphics and Performance

Stealth Thin is one of the first laptops to launch with Intel’s 8th Gen Coffee Lake processor. One of the most significant improvements is that these new chips have six cores instead of four, which offer more performance than the previous generation. All this new power has clearly shown that I watched an episode of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy on Netflix while running Windows Defender with 25 open tabs in Google Chrome. The Stealth 3.9 GHz Intel Core i7-8750H processor with 16 GB of RAM scanned the task, showing no latency.

The 512 GB M12 SSD from Stealth produced a transfer rate of 193.3 megabytes per second when duplicating a media file of 4.97 GB. The score is well below the average of 640.5 MBps. The Alienware 15 (512 GB PCIe SSD) achieved a result of 299.3 MBps, while the 1510 (256 GB NVMe SSD) produced a rate of 391.5 MBps. So thin and incredibly powerful.

The Stealth ships a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q GPU with 8GB of VRAM. Sitting comfortably between a regular 1070 and 1080 GTX, the GPU is powerful enough to provide good frame rates at the max settings as well as VR support. However, thanks to the focus on energy efficiency and consumption, the system operates quieter and at a cooler temperature than common systems.

Battery Life and Heat

Usually, on a gaming laptop, you need to trade energy for battery life. Not so with stealth. Thanks to this energy-saving GPU, the system lasted 5 hours and 40 minutes on the battery test, which involves surfing the wireless web at 150 nits of brightness, less then the average of 6 hours and 50 minutes. The Zephyrus tapped after 2:47.

I played Witcher 3 for 15 minutes. When I was done, I took the Stealth temperature in three strategic places. The touchpad measures 82 degrees Fahrenheit, while the center reaches 101, which is below than 95-degree degree comfort threshold. But the center of the bottom of the laptop was even hotter, at 122 degrees. MSI re-equipped its latest-generation Stealth fans with slimmer fan blades and added five heat pipes instead of three.

Design

The Inspiron maintains the black and red design you see on almost any gaming notebook but depending on the color you choose; you get either something incredibly unobtrusive or something colorful and proud. Our examination unit was a matte black professional model, with a soft-touch lid bearing the Dell logo in a bright red. The rear, featuring a series of vents, comes in straight, gray plastic lines. It’s not as fun as the cobweb accents of the previous year.

The interior maintains this pattern, with a soft black deck, an island-style keyboard with red lettering and backlight, and a touchpad surrounded by a crimson border. The power button is on the top left corner also serves as a fingerprint reader. On the sides, you’ll find just about every port you’ll need for peripherals and monitors. On the left, is a Noble lock slot, an Ethernet jack, a USB 3.0 port and an SD card slot. The right houses the headphone jack, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 port, and an HDMI output.

Keyboard and TouchPad

This keyboard has only 1.2 millimeters of displacement and requires a heavyweight of 79 grams of actuation to press the keys, so I found myself thoroughly steadily. Typing is not a pleasant experience. The keyboard is placed too far back. I have this problem on most Dell Inspiron laptops (I’d rather have a slightly shorter trackpad), and when this placement is associated with the shallow keyboard, the experience is just uncomfortable.

The touchpad is 4.1 x 3.1 inches, which is nice and roomy but more significant than any reasonable person needs. It’s plastic, so it does not feel as good as metal or glass touchpads, but it’s accurate when you’re navigating and use gestures like pinching to zoom in and tap four fingers to reach the Action Center. Display

The original model of the Dell Inspiron Gaming laptop had a horrible screen. Thank God Dell has improved the panel this time. The 15.6-inch 1080p display is still not the best on the market, but switching to an IPS panel gives you more accurate colors and wider viewing angles. When I watched the Black Panther trailer, I found that the screen was sharp, and I could see all the intricate designs on the T’Challa costume.

The Inspiron panel covers 70% of the sRGB color gamut, which is below the overall average (100%), as well as the Strix (113%) and Predator (81%) indexes, which have more rich colors. The Legion, however, is duller, at only 68%. On our light meter, the Inspiron’s screen averaged 233 nits, lower than the average (275 nits) and the Strix display (297 nits). But the Predator (226 nits) and the Legion (220 nits) are even darker.

Graphics and Performance

The Inspiron comes with a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with a Max-Q design and 6GB of VRAM. It’s sturdy enough to play games with high settings, but you’ll need to lower some game settings to get the best frame rates. Max-Q cards allow for quieter and lighter laptops, but also less potent than an ordinary GTX 1060.

With an Intel Core i5-7300U 2.5GHz processor, 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, the Inspiron can be used to work as much as for the game. With 30 open tabs, including an Overwatch streaming of Twitch, the laptop showed no sign of lag. It took 15 seconds for the Dell gaming laptop to copy 4.97 GB of files, for a throughput of 339 megabytes per second. It is faster than the average of 262 Mbps, as well as the rates of Strix (a very slow 32.2 Mbps) and Predator (188.5 Mbps). The Legion is just a little younger, however, at 363.5 Mbps.

Battery Life and Heat

Some of the compromises of the Inspiron are offset by the fact that it lasts much longer than most other game books. It lasted 7 hours and 5 minutes on the battery test, which is to browse the web via Wi-Fi regularly. The average score is 6:50, but that includes a lot of computers without Discrete GPUs. Only the Predator gets closer to the Inspiron at 6:48, while the Strix (3:32) and the Legion (3:39) offer barely half the stamina.

The Inspiron remains nice and cool under normal conditions of use. After streaming 15 minutes of Full-HD video from YouTube, the laptop measured 82 degrees Fahrenheit down, 84 degrees in the center of the keyboard and only 77 degrees on the touchpad. It’s a lot cooler than our 95-degree comfort zone. Of course, you’ll want to put the laptop on a table or desk while playing. During a session of Middle Earth: Shadow of War, the touchpad climbed to 82 degrees, the keyboard hit a soft 100 degrees, and the bottom of the machine reached 113 degrees. We consider temperatures above 95 degrees uncomfortable.

You get what you pay, and while the Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming has a boring keyboard and a screen that is not as bright or colorful as the competitors, you still get a solid deal with a GTX 1060 Max-Q GPU. for less than a big one. Overall, the Inspiron 15 7000 continues to be among the best values in the budget games if you can handle its shortcomings.

Design

The Yoga 920 is a suave 2-in-1, with its all-aluminum chassis, angled rails and an attractive hinge that folds the lid in tablet, tent or stand mode. As on the Yoga 910, there is a very fine bezel around the screen, but fortunately, on the Yoga 920, the webcam is located above the screen, not below. However, the real star of the show is the beautiful bronze color of the laptop, which was not present on previous models. The color is pleasantly consistent on its lid, hinge, apron and even keys.

The Yoga 920 has a solid combination of ports for such a slim system. The left side contains two Thunderbolt 3 ports, which can be used to charge or connect high-speed devices and docking stations. The right side includes a USB 3.0 port for connection to traditional USB devices, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is also a single-contact fingerprint reader on the bridge, so you can use Windows Hello to log into the operating system with a single tap.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard of Yoga 920 is a mixed bag. The keys have only 1.3 mm vertical stroke (1.5 to 2 mm is typical), but require a force of 68 grams of power to operate (65 to 70 grams is standard). The keys were bright enough but did not offer enough resistance to prevent me from going down (hitting the base with a lot of force) several times. On the right side, the right Shift key is full size and placed above the arrow keys – a massive improvement over the size and location of the strange keys of the Yoga 910.

The 4.1 x 2 touchpad, 7 inches provided accurate navigation on the desktop. It also responded in a fluid and precise manner to multitouch gestures such as the zoom pinch and the three-finger scan.

The Yoga 920 comes with Lenovo’s Active Pen 2 pen, making the notebook a useful device for drawing or scribbling handwritten notes. The Active Pen 2 is about the size of a pencil or a shortened pen, which makes the writing more natural than with some pen the size of a golf pencil that we obtained with other laptops. While many 2-in-1 stylus machines do not provide an easy way to store your pen, the Yoga 920 comes with a small attachment that allows you to attach the pen to the Type-A USB port on the right side for easy transportation.

Display

The 13.9-inch screen of the Yoga 920 is available in 1920 x 1080 and 3840 x 2160 resolutions. The 1920 x 1080 panel on our review unit offered bright, crisp images. When I watched a trailer for Thor: Ragnarok, the green in the skin of Hulk and the red in Thor’s cape jumped. The panel was bright enough, with wide viewing angles that remained true up to 60 degrees to the right or left and faded only slightly as we moved away from the center.

According to our colorimeter, the Yoga 920 reproduces a high percentage of the sRGB color gamut, slightly above the ultraportable-notebook category average (100%) and the HP Specter x360 (102%). The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (107 percent) was a little more dynamic. At 284 nits, the Yoga 920’s display has a brightness roughly equal to the category average (275 nits). The HP Specter x360 (318 nits) and the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (314 nits) were brighter.

Graphics and Performance

With its Intel 8e Gen Core i7-8550U processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB fast NVMe-PCIe SSD, the Yoga 920 delivers dominant performance. It’s the first laptop we’ve tested with an 8th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, and comparing it to competitors with 7th Gen Core processors seems almost unfair. By moving from the 7th to the 8th generation, Intel has doubled the number of cores of its traditional portable processors from two to four, while increasing the higher clock speeds, and the results are impressive.

The NVMe-PCIe SSD on the laptop only took 17 seconds to copy 4.97 GB of multimedia files, for a bitrate of 299.9 Mbps, which is much faster than the category average (211.8 Mbps) and the XPS 13 2-in-1). However, the Spectrum x360 was just a little faster, reaching a rate of 318 Mbps.

Although we do not use the Yoga 920 as a serious gaming platform, its integrated Intel UHD 620 graphics chip is good enough for video playback or less demanding titles. The laptop scored a respectable 86.267 on 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited, a graphical test. On Dirt 3, a running game that works well on ultraportable laptops, the Yoga 920 achieves a frame rate of 35 frames per second. This is slightly below the category average (39 fps) and the Spectrum x360 (40 fps).

Battery Life and Heat

The Yoga 920 offers an imposing range that will allow you to leave your charger at home. The 2 in 1 lasted 12 hours and 22 minutes on the battery test, which implies continuous web browsing via Wi-Fi. It’s about 4 hours longer than the category average (6:50) and the Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 (8:27). It’s also about 2 hours better than HP Specter x360 (10:06) and last year’s Yoga 910 (10:36). The Yoga 920 also remained quite cool throughout our testing, registering 90 degrees Fahrenheit on our heat test.
